Introduction

Community Livestock and Dairy Development Project (CLDDP): BGD/98/009 is the first of its type funded by UNDP and executed by Grameen Motsho O Pashusampad Foundation (GMPF) with technical assistance of FAO. The overall objectives of the project aimed at poverty reduction by providing a model for sustainable rural development through livestock based income-generating activities at the rural community level. Basically it is a community based development project. Apart from poverty alleviation through economic upliftment there are other concepts and ideas in the project such as community development, community empowerment, social development, gender issue i.e. 50:50 male female ratio and ownership of the community enterprises like "Community Dairy Enterprises and Community Feed Mills" where VGMs owned 70% share and GMPF 30%. It is also an integrated model for fish-crop-livestock and dairy development activities along with horticulture and social afforestation.

The project was designed to provide micro-credit and support services to enable VGMs (Village Group Members) to diversify their income from different type of packages and activities. To become sustainable the project has developed all probable facilities such as Veterinary inputs and services, marketing of milk and milk products and meat, supply of quality feeds and fodder for the animals and better food and nutrition for the VGMs themselves in particular and people in general.

In addition to Dairy and Feed Mill enterprises some important funds like Livestock Development Fund (LDF) and Livestock Insurance Fund (LIF) have been created from different sources including VGMs' contribution. The accumulated amount in the Insurance Fund realised as premium from the VGMs @ 3.0% of the cost of packages (Cows/heifers) are being utilised for providing new cows/heifers to the VGMs in case of death with no fault of their own and LDF for facilitating veterinary inputs and services including salary of technical personnel after project period for future sustainability.

In other words, it can be said that it is a complete sustainable project with diversified activities, thoughts and ideas for bringing about the change in the socio-economic condition of the landless and assetless poor community of the society.
