GMPF at a Glance
 
1.
Introduction
Grameen Motsho O Pashusampad Foundation (GMPF) -is a sister organization of Grameen Bank (GB)- a specialized bank globally well-known for its commitment towards poverty alleviation through provision of micro-credit. In order to address the poverty issue more effectively GB diversified its activities and undertook various interventions in the field of rural development including fisheries & livestock sub sectors..
 
2.
The chronology of creation & development of GMPF

1986-88

:

Government of Bangladesh (GoB) handed over 5 of its prestigious projects and 20 fish seed multiplication farms to G.B on long term lease for better and meaningful management through community participation.n.

1988-84

:

GB managed these projects initially by its R & D and Technology Projects Division (TPD) and re-excavated and rehabilitated the derelict ponds.

1990

:

GB involved the rural landless poor living in and around the pond embankments in fisheries operations for poverty alleviation.

1994

:

Grameen Motsho Foundation (GMF) was established on 16th February,1994 and was registered with the Registrar of Joint Stock companies, GoB under companies Act. as “an association not for profit

1998

:

GMF was also registered with the Director General of NGO Bureau, GoB on 1st Sept. 1998

2000

:

On 15th July, 1999 UNDP funded Community Livestock and Dairy Development Project: BGD/98/009 (CLDDP) was added to GMF in order to integrate livestock with fisheries to provide more workloads and more benefits to the landless people in order to make a model for poverty alleviation and sustainable livelihood.

2003

:

The title of the organization was changed to Grameen Motsho O Pashusampad Foundation (GMPF) on 15th January 2003 and was registered by the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies, GoB.

4. GMPF BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 
The GMPF Board of Directors consists of 9 members. Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director, Grameen Bank is the Chairman of the Board. The Managing Director of GMPF is the Chief Executive Officer of the Organisation. The Board meets once every 3 months whereas the General Body meets once every year.

Goals
Diversifying rural production;
Increasing rural employment potential specially for women;
Producing more fish, crops, horticulture, livestock and dairy products for improving nutritional status of the poor;
Raising the net income of the rural poor;
Increasing opportunities for foreign exchange;
Ensuring a sustainable livelihood for the poor.

GMPF Development Objectives

Development objectives of the foundation is to contribute to national efforts for poverty alleviation by providing a ‘Model’ for sustainable livelihood through Community based fisheries, livestock, horticulture and social afforestation activities for income generation at rural level, which are-

To enhance development opportunities for the rural poor specially for women;
To improve house hold food security and nutrition;
To increase family income sustainably;
To safeguard the environment by promoting an integrated farming system.

Geographical Coverage
The GMPF activities are spread over 13 districts and 36 Upazilas (subdistricts) of Bangladesh specially in the poverty stricken north western part of the country. The districts are: Tangail, Sirajgonj, Pabna, Bogra, Rangpur, Gaibanda, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagar, Satkhira, Chittagong & Coxs Bazar.

With its objectives, plans and policies, GMPF executed following five types of projects

Community Based Aquaculture Projects for poverty alleviation
 
(i) Joysagar Fish Farm Project with 808 derelict ponds of 707 ha
(ii) Dinajpur Fish Farm Project with 65 ponds of 155 ha
(iii) Jamuna Borrow-Pit Fisheries Project with 60 ponds 64 ha
(iv) Command Area Development Project, PIRDP Pabna with 1750 ponds with 367 ha
  8.2 Community Based Open water Inland Fisheries Management Projects
(v) 4th Fisheries-Ichamati River Fisheries Management Project, DoF, Pabna 42 km long with 412ha water areas
(vi) 4th Fisheries – NPBSS Beel Fisheries Management Project, DoF, Gobindagonj, Gaibandha, 5 beels with 1000ha
  8.3 Community Based Coastal and estuarine Fisheries Management
  (vii) Empowerment of Coastal Fishing Community (ECFC) for Security Livelihood (Social Mobilisation Component, Cox’s Bazar)
